America is still exceptional even when the President declares it isn’t
The irony of American exceptionalism is that only the right is allowed to question it. Were I to say, America is a beacon of human rights, and, where it falls short of its promise, can be held to account by its citizens once they organize, i would be accused of trashing this great nation. Those same accusers would then turn around and pronounce that America has become a second-rate power thanks to the example of people like me.
To demand that we “make America great again” is to imply it’s fallen into weakness and decay. I like to think the team batting average has gone down because we benched the first team and the reserves and turned over government to the players who barely qualify for the low minors. It’s still a great team once we turn the bat over to the best of the best, professionally and intellectually.
But when we insist on ripping apart public education, and destroying faith in people who invest in study and research and claim the average Joe knows more than people who devoted their life to service, then we risk turning the team over to players who barely have the skills for T-ball.
