If the truth be told, it was my uncle who refused to speak to the family for years after my father joked about racists (and, since we were Baptist, people who hate Catholics). Years later he even crossed the street to avoid meeting my wife and I. We may try to embrace the racist branches of family, but often they choose to severe themselves from the tree.
