The police and FBI inspired so much dissent (including mine) that it’s hard not to thank them. I was barred from working ministries with high school students at a Christian Academy. The counselor who recruited me told me the FBI and local police tagged me as a “radical activist and drug dealer.” They based it on my being a high school debater who wrote several articles for the underground papers years before. Oh, and my cousin, who had attended the school and gave me a lid for my birthday said I was his dealer when they busted him. (We were high school juniors.) Good enough for probable cause in those days.
That wake up call reminded me I couldn’t play nice with the right wingers trying to co-opt the Jesus movement (which, alas, they did anyway) and returned me to the straight and narrow.
